The application bill starts before acceptance. Build one budget for the MCAT and applications—and another for the debt attached to each school.
THE IDEA
The cost arrives in layers. For 2026, AAMC lists the standard MCAT registration fee at $355. For the 2027 AMCAS cycle, the primary application costs $180 for the first school and $48 for each additional school. School-specific secondary fees, transcript delivery, interview clothing, and travel can add more, so build those from each school’s actual requirements rather than relying on a national estimate.
Cost-aware school choice begins with each offer’s full cost of attendance, grants and scholarships, expected borrowing, and living costs—not the tuition headline alone. For new professional-school borrowers, post–July 1, 2026 federal rules cap Direct Unsubsidized borrowing at $50,000 per year and $200,000 aggregate, with a $257,500 lifetime cap on a student’s own federal borrowing. A student enrolled in a program by June 30, 2026 who had already received a Direct Loan for that program may use the legacy exception for the lesser of three academic years or the remaining time to completion.
